The ASRT Online Advocacy Academy gives ASRT members the opportunity to learn how to affect positive change in the standards and regulations guiding the profession, as well as the skills they will need to protect the profession against future perils.

This 10-week course is designed to help participants:

Promote, enhance and defend the profession’s standards by developing skills to navigate the legislative and regulatory process.
Work toward a leadership position on their affiliate’s board and strengthen their affiliate society’s advocacy and media relations skills.
Develop personal advocacy and organizational skills.

Course Topics

The ASRT Online Advocacy Academy (OLAA) is moderated through a private group established in the ASRT Communities. Learning takes place through online-narrated learning modules, discussion posts, conference calls and hands-on projects.

Module 1
Who and What Makes a Good Advocate?

Objectives:

Identify advocacy development opportunities for affiliate societies.
Identify skills that individuals may already have to assist them in becoming strong advocates for the profession.
Develop skills to help make fellow R.T.s, patients and employers aware of professional issues.
Enhance the visibility of the profession and affiliate societies in the health care community.

Strategic Planning for Advocacy Efforts

Objectives:

Learn strategic plan development and management.
Set goals and benchmark progress.

SWOT analysis.
Strategic planning tools.
Benchmarking.

Module 3
Researching the Issues and the Legalities of Lobbying

Objectives:

Elements of researching legal standards.
Statutes and regulations.
Bill and regulation drafting.
State lobbying, filing and reporting.
Hiring and managing a lobbyist.

Working With Change Leaders

Objectives:

Message development and creating opportunities for the public to become involved.
Collateral materials.
Advocacy events.
Knowing which lawmakers and stakeholders to target.
Legislative process.

Telling Your Advocacy Story To Get Others Involved

Public and Media Relations.

Public relations and advocacy.
Creating a PR plan.

Sustaining the Effort

Objectives:

Identify issues and trends and refresh your long-term advocacy strategic plan.
Learn methods for attracting new advocacy volunteers.
Develop an advocacy volunteer succession plan.
Budget for long-term affiliate advocacy efforts.
Create long-term relationships with lawmakers.

Online Advocacy Academy

Who benefits from the Online Advocacy Academy?

Medical imaging and radiation therapy professionals who want to help shape the standards that guide professional practice are an essential element of patient safety and quality health care. Participants will learn about legislative and regulatory processes, ways to strengthen strategic planning and how to build a lasting advocacy program.
Who is eligible to apply?

Applicants must be current members of ASRT and their affiliate society.
How much time does the online course take each week?

Participants can expect to devote two to four hours each week to online assignments, content viewing and discussions. A conference call will be conducted after every two modules to answer questions and discuss what you have learned in a group environment. Participants must complete the online coursework and assignments to receive a certificate of completion from the ASRT.
Does the Online Advocacy Academy offer continuing education credit?

No, participation in the academy does not qualify for CE credit.
What technology is needed to participate in the academy?
The Online Advocacy Academy is moderated through the ASRT Communities. A private community is available for selected participants. To view the modules, your system must meet the following requirements:
- Processor: 400 MHz or faster
- Platform: PC or Mac
- Browser: Internet Explorer 7 or higher, Mozilla Firefox 3.0 or higher, Safari or Chrome
- Sound card with speakers or headphones
- High-speed internet connection (Dial-up connections are not recommended)
- Popups must be enabled on your browser, particularly if you run the Google Toolbar.
