Caring for Patients with Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities

Thursday, May 15, noon Central time
    1 Category A CE Credit
  • What You'll Learn

Patients with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) are individuals who experience limitations in both intellectual functioning and adaptive behavior. Providing care for these patients requires thoughtful, tailored approaches because they often have unique health care needs, communication challenges and sensory sensitivities that can complicate medical procedures. As such, health care providers must create care plans that are individualized, culturally sensitive and family inclusive to promote optimal health outcomes.

    Objectives

After this presentation, the attendee will be able to:

    • Discuss individualized care plans that address the unique medical, sensory and communication needs of patients with IDD.
    • Identify effective communication techniques, such as using visual aids, clear language and nonverbal cues, to ensure patients with IDD can understand and engage with their care.
    • Examine solutions for offering targeted training and resources for health care providers, including family members and caregivers, to enhance understanding of IDD and improve care delivery.
