Activity Information

Live-lecture activities are usually presented by one or more speakers on a scheduled date and time to a live audience. Seminars, conferences, courses, web conferencing and webinars are all considered live lecture.

Each submission should contain:

• Objectives
• Speaker Information - First Name, Last Name, Credentials, Email Address and Place of Employment.
• If the live lecture is more than two hours in length, a program agenda or schedule is required. The schedule must include:
  • Start times, breaks, meals, time for change of speaker and end times.
  • Time allotted for lab, hands-on practice, demonstrations, positioning practice, audience participation, group activities, role playing and other interactive exercises must be clearly identified in the schedule.
• We encourage CE sponsors to seek single day or single CE activity approvals rather than one reference number for a multi-day seminar. If a multi-day seminar is approved under one reference number, the technologist is required to complete the entire multi-day seminar to receive any credit.

The length of a live lecture activity is determined by the activity schedule or agenda.

The student’s program director or other identified faculty should evaluate the presentation for accuracy, professionalism and speaking skills. A letter of attestation must accompany the RFA submission.

The American Registry of Radiologic Technologists^® (ARRT^®) discourages CE providers from scheduling educational sessions during a meal. The activity sponsor must allow time for the meal to be completed before or after the CE activity.

Coordinators may submit substitute or backup lectures for approval if they anticipate a speaker will cancel. The ASRT will assign a reference number to each backup lecture. The sponsor may not use pre-existing reference numbers for substitute lectures.

The sponsor must monitor attendance to ensure that a participant attends an activity as it is designed and approved, and participants must attend the entire activity as approved to earn continuing education (CE) credit.

The sponsor is required to maintain a copy of the attendance documentation used for their activity for five years after the presentation date. The sponsor must be able to verify attendance in a case of an audit by the ARRT^® or state licensing agency.

Tumor board or case review-formatted activities are approved as a one-time only presentation.

Each tumor board or case-review activity requires an outline, description of cases to be presented and the credentials of the moderator and presenters.

Please do not disclose any patient information; a generic identifier may be used to identify the case, treatment, pathology reports and imaging study results for each presentation.

Training on medical or imaging equipment may be completed at a vendor's corporate facility or onsite in the clinical setting.

Credit is awarded for:

• Lecture.
• Instructor-led demonstration by the applications specialist. The applications specialist must be actively teaching or demonstrating a procedure.
• Participant hands-on portions of the program.
• Lab or clinical practice time.

Not eligible for credit:

• Review of the equipment operations manual.
• Patient scanning or exams.

Notes:

• Credit for applications, equipment training and user’s meetings is based on a 60-minute contact hour.
• Credit for on-site (facility) applications training will be designated with an “F” at the end of the approval reference number and credit is capped by ARRT^® at 8 CE credits per biennium.
  • On-site (facility) applications training courses may be approved for more than 8 CE credits; however, ARRT^® will only accept the allowable amount.
• Credit for online, webinar and corporate facility trainings, as well as user’s meetings, are not affected by the cap. Credit for these formats is designated with a “C” for corporate setting.
• Certificates must include the “F” or “C” designation in the reference number and should always include the amount of credit earned by the participant.
• When an Applications activity is presented in both the corporate and hospital/clinical facility the activity will receive two separate reference numbers - one reference number with the "C" designation and one with the "F" designation.
  • Please submit the activity only one time - the separate reference numbers will be generated upon review. The first reference number will be charged under our current fee structure. The second reference number will be 50% of the original fee.

“Hands-on” interaction is defined as active personal physical involvement by the CE activity participant.

The CE activity must include actionable learning objectives that are measurable and linked to the job tasks typically performed by R.T.s as determined by the ARRT^® task inventories.

• Examples of psychomotor objective verbs: build, create, describe, display, distinguish, explain, identify, modify, perform, position, practice
• Example actionable learning objective: After completing this activity, the participant will be able to display proper collimation techniques when performing a pediatric abdomen exam

There must be ample time allowed for each CE activity participant to demonstrate skill development for each actionable learning objective submitted by the CE Sponsor.

To receive CE credit for the “hands-on” portion of a CE activity, the CE Sponsor must identify a maximum number of CE participants that may earn credit during the CE activity offering. This standardization should be based on the average time utilized by a number of learners to complete the measurable and actionable learning objectives.

Notes:

• The use of simulation in a CE activity to provide the participant with an opportunity to gain identified psychomotor skills is acceptable.
• CE credit awarded for didactic components and psychomotor components of a CE activity have the same per unit of time value.
• This policy is not applicable for academic courses with a psychomotor component.

If you would like to offer your activity in a live virtual webinar format, the activity must have a valid approval, be presented at a scheduled date and time, and include multi-factor attendance verification.

Group Viewing Attendance Verification:

• Sign-in sheets must be used at all viewing locations (participants must sign in before the broadcast begins).
• A site monitor must document attendance and verify attendees are present for the entire broadcast (an attendee can be the site monitor).

Individual Viewing Attendance Verification:

• Attendees must register prior to the broadcast.
• The coordinator records data from the broadcast platform indicating when attendees log on and off.
• One of the following is also required:
  • A post-broadcast quiz.
  • A post-broadcast survey.
  • Engagement data provided by the broadcast platform.
  • Visual monitoring of attendees by the sponsor.

Note: Webcasts archived for independent (“on-demand”) access are considered self-learning activities and must follow the self-learning guidelines.

Panel discussions and question-and-answer sessions are not approved separately unless an outline, objectives or list of questions are submitted for review.

Self-learning activities are stand-alone activities developed for home study or self-directed, individual use.

Each submission should contain:

• A copy of the activity (e.g., e-book, article or video) or access to the online format. The coordinator must provide the web URL, username and password.
• Post-test: Access to online post-tests must be provided at time of submission.
• Answer key with location of the answers in the activity or product.

Self-learning activity guidelines:

• Documented permission for use of reprinted material; copyrighted materials must be appropriately identified and referenced.
• All images, charts, diagrams, tables and text must be legible and correctly labeled.
• Acronyms must be spelled out in first use or a glossary of terms must be provided.
• Taking the post-test is restricted to three attempts.
• All test bank questions and answers must be provided for review. The certificate is awarded only after a participant successfully completes the activity and post-test. The participant must not be able to alter the online certificate.

Online CE activities may include interactive components in which the participant responds to questions concerning the content of the learning exercise. These interactive questions must be embedded in the content of the activity. For each incorrect response, the participant is offered an immediate opportunity for remediation or review of the applicable activity content, or is provided feedback about the correct response.

Interactive components are considered to be part of the learning process and may be awarded CE credit. The number of interactive activities allowed is two activities (maximum) per 15 minutes of viewing time.

The CE activity must have a post-test at the conclusion of the activity and the post-test questions must be different than the interactive questions

Post-test Requirements:

• Minimum passing score of 75%.
• Maximum of three attempts to pass the post-test.
• Minimum number of questions based on credit amount. Refer to the Number of Questions section below.
• If using a test bank, all questions and answers must be provided.
• Provide answer key indicating location of answers in the content.
• The number of incorrect answers or the percent correct may be provided, but the specific questions answered incorrectly must not be identified. Correct answers to the post-test must not be provided until after the post-test has been passed or after three unsuccessful attempts.
• Quality questions that address the major topics presented.

Post-test Guidelines:

• Matching and fill-in-the-blank question formats are acceptable.
• “All of the above,” “None of the above” and “Both a and b” are acceptable options; however, the combined-response format is preferred. Only one of these options may be used within the same question
• Multiple-choice questions should have four options for an answer and may have more than one correct answer. The question stem should include these instructions: “More than one answer may be correct.” To receive credit for correctly answering the question, the participant must select all correct answers.
• Up to 10% of the questions can be true/false or yes/no, 10% matching, 10% "hot spot” format (clicking on an image or picture to answer) and 10% fill-in-the blank for a total of 40%. The remaining 60% of the questions should be multiple choice.
• All options should be plausible.
• All negative wording such as not and except should be highlighted by using uppercase, bold or italic text. To help emphasize the thought, positive words such as most, always and true may be highlighted as stated above to ensure the participant understands the question

Note: 8 post test questions are needed for each credit.

Continuing education credit is based on the contact hour (equal to 50 to 60 minutes) and is awarded one credit. Activities less than 15 minutes in total length are not awarded credit.

Self-learning activity length is determined by the ARRT^® CE formula. Variations of the following formula have been assigned to the different types of CE activities that are accepted by the ARRT^®. Defining criteria for the formula have been provided.

Explanation of Formula Factors:
140 = average reading speed of adults for technical content.
1.85 = estimated average completion time per question.
50 = minutes equal to one (1.0) CE credit per ARRT^®.

Note: Total minutes not equally divisible by 50 should be rounded down to the nearest quarter credit

Effective 8/31/2022, ASRT will no longer review or renew textbooks, textbook chapters, eBooks, or any published text-based materials. Any existing approvals will remain valid until the activity’s expiration date.

The ASRT reserves the right to deny or withdraw approval of any educational activity that does not meet the definition and requirements set by the ARRT^®:

• A continuing education activity is a learning activity that is planned, organized and administered to enhance the professional knowledge and skills underlying the professional performance that the R.T. or R.R.A. uses to provide services to patients, the public, or the medical profession. To qualify as a CE activity, it must provide sufficient depth and scope of a subject area.

A denial is issued if the content is outdated, contains errors or inaccurate material or is determined to lack depth and scope in the topic. An activity also may be denied approval if the length is less than 15 minutes or if the activity format does not meet ARRT^® standards.

The topics listed below are not eligible for CE approval. This list is not exhaustive, and additional topics that are not directly related to professional practice may also be deemed ineligible for approval.

• Content that does not align with ASRT’s mission and vision for quality, safe patient care.
• Presentations covering general CE requirements: It is the responsibility of the technologist to be aware of the CE requirements and criteria for each agency he or she is certified with.
• Alcohol and drug assessment: outside the scope of practice for a radiologic technologist
• Computer programming
• Presentations on personal finance
• Spirometry: outside the scope of practice for a radiologic technologist
• Digital photography
• Airport security
• Art (drawing, painting)
• Explorations in movement
• Drumming/group drumming
• Yoga
• TaiChi massage
• Therapeutic touch

If an activity is offered in more than one format, then each format must be reviewed and approved separately. A separate request must be submitted for each format. If the content and credit calculation is the same, then the same reference number is assigned. Similar activities, in which more than 50% of the content is different, may be assigned different reference numbers. Activities that are the same but offered by more than one sponsor must include the following disclaimer: “This activity may be available in multiple formats or from different sponsors. A self-learning activity can be completed only once per biennium.”
